Nantong is located on an alluvial plain along the lower reach of the Yangtze River, which dates back to over 6500 years ago. The city is built on flat terrains with an average above sea level (waterway height) of approximately three meters. Most areas within its border have soft soil with simple geologic structure, thus belonging to a good place along Yangtze River that is suitable for engineering construction. There are five mountains within the city area (i.e. Lang Mountain, Jian Mountain, Jun Mountain, Huangni Mountain and Maan Mountain), resulted from the submergence of Jiangnan ancient land during the Himalayas orogenic movement.
