As one of the first cities opening to the outside world, Nantong promises presents an admirable development in its open economy. With the state -level Nantong Economic and Technological Development Zone playing a leading role, the city has constructed a development community consisting of 11 development areas of different levels and varieties with diverse characteristics. The development areas are highly supplementary to each other and able to adapt to industrial migrations of different scales and levels. Businessmen from more than 60 countries and regions have already invested and started their business operations in Nantong. The number of foreign-funded enterprises in the city have has exceeded 2000. A number of well-known enterprises, such as Japan's Oji Paper, Toray, Teijin, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Swiss Syngenta, Novartis, American Cargill, Celanese, and Dow Chemical, have made relatively big investment in Nantong.
